I volunteer-run the computer lab at a K-8 private school in San Lorenzo, CA. Like many other private schools, we are seeing declining enrollments that threaten our short and long-term survival, and our goal of providing a quality well-rounded alternative learning environment to the East Bay community. We use Moodle for some of our in-school online activities, but as I teach online classes at a technical community college where Blackboard is used exclusively, I have come to appreciate the value of a robust commercial system for online learning. My immediate goal is to engage our school families and the larger community of home-schooled and independent learners in our area, in a collaboration for learning, with the involvement of classroom teachers here who have decades of educational experience. We would start modestly, with some courses of general usefulness, like computer technology, math, and writing, and offer online tutoring and homework assistance. A Blackboard Collaborate site would be an ideal platform to use, because of its intuitive interface and rich set of tools.
